With the Twenty One Pilots’ fourth record ‘Blurryface’ released almost three years ago, fans are eagerly waiting on news about album number five. As internet investigators discover more and more about the next album, here’s what we know so far.
Do we have a release date for the next Twenty One Pilots album?
Nothing official has been announced, but one fan theory speculates that the album could be coming on Friday July 13. This has come from searching ‘Friday’ on the Twenty One Pilots website – which results in these error messages:
What about a track listing?
We don’t have a tracklisting yet.
Has recording started?
With the band on internet silence, we can’t know for sure what stage in the recording process they’re on.
What will Twenty One Pilot’s fifth album sound like?
In an interview with Alternative Press Tyler revealed that whilst on tour he’d been in the studio working on new ideas for music: “I was working on something last night that I’m really excited about…Right now I think it would be a little less up-tempo than the last record. I would want to focus a little more on the lyrical content.”
Will there be any collaborations?
This is yet unconfirmed. However last year Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo revealed he had met Tyler, so they could have been working on new music?
What’s this Dema/Clancy theory about then?
Ooh boy. It’s well know that Twenty One Pilots’ fans are some of the most dedicated out there, and they’re also some of the best internet sleuths around, and have been investigating this theory about the new album. If you want to properly delve into the theory, then reddit user DJNapkin has created this megathread on it.
But in short, it looks like the band are creating a concept album, and have laid a trail of online breadcrumbs online to reveal information about it.
It looks like it’s been a long time in the making, starting when the band announced their hiatus last year. To mark their hiatus, the last thing they posted on Twitter was this image, that reads ‘And now I just sit in this silence’. The band haven’t posted anything on their account since:
Then later in the year, when drummer Josh Dun collected an award at the APMA’s, in his aspeech said: “Tyler wishes he could be here, but he’s actually severing ties with dema.” A bit of an odd statement – because wtf is a dema? But fans did a quick google, and realised that Dema can mean “tower of silence”:
The mention of silence led people to think that the two things were connected, and that’s where the theory really begun.
Then in April 2018, fans avidly searching the Twenty One Pilots website noticed a change on the ‘Vessel’ page, where the video at the top changed. The new video included a link to this website at the end, which features the slightly ominous message: “you are in violation. thEy mustn’t know you were here. no one should ever find out About this. you can never tell anyone about thiS — for The sake of the others’ survIval, you muSt keep this silent. we mUst keeP silent. no one can know. no one can know. no o ne c an kn ow_” as well as “”(Violation Code. 15398642_14)”
Using the violation code on the website, fans also found this additional page on the website. Since then, they’ve have been digging into the site, trying to find pieces of information. For an in-depth analysis of of this mad complicated theory alongside this reddit threat, The Pop Song Professor’s analysis video will help unravel it.
